Learn to weave, one step at a time

I’m delighted to introduce the Dobby & Rose Learn to Weave Kit — a complete introduction to weaving on a frame loom, created to help you learn from the comfort of your own home.

I wanted this to be much more than a box containing a loom and some yarn. I’ve brought together the knowledge and techniques I teach in my workshops and created a carefully structured, step-by-step weaving experience that you can work through at your own pace.

You’ll begin right at the beginning — assembling your loom and putting on your first warp — before learning how to read a weaving pattern and create five different woven structures.

Along the way, you’ll record and mount your finished pieces onto the sample archive cards included in the kit, creating your own collection of woven references to keep and return to.

My hope is that by the end, you’ll not only have created five beautiful woven samples, but will have gained the understanding and confidence to continue weaving and experimenting for yourself.

What’s included?

Everything you need to begin your weaving journey:

• Louët Lisa frame loom – a beautifully designed wooden loom, made in Holland, which is easy to assemble, portable and lovely to weave on.
• Five colours of British wool – Airedale, Bishopdale, Coverdale, Dentdale and Eskdale, carefully chosen to allow you to explore colour, pattern and structure.
• The Dobby & Rose comprehensive weaving guide – clear, step-by-step instructions taking you through the whole process, from assembling and warping your loom to weaving and finishing your samples.
• Five sample archive cards – one for each woven structure, so you can mount and record your work as you go.
• Needles, card and loom accessories – all the little things you need to get started.
• Supporting online videos – additional visual guidance to help you through the different stages of the kit.

No previous weaving experience needed

The kit has been designed especially for complete beginners and anyone who would love to learn more about the foundations of weaving.

You don’t need to know any weaving terminology or have used a loom before. The guide takes you through each stage in order, introducing new techniques and terminology as you need them.

Work through it at your own pace, return to a section whenever you need to, and use the supporting videos if you’d prefer to see a technique demonstrated.

It’s a little bit like having me there in the studio with you — just without the tea and biscuits!

British wool, naturally

I chose British wool for this kit both for its wonderful qualities as a weaving yarn and to support British farmers and the wool industry here in the UK.

Wool is a lovely fibre to learn with. It has enough grip to help the yarns stay in place while you're weaving, while its natural character allows you to really see how colour, yarn and structure interact.

The yarn is spun in Yorkshire from a blend of Bluefaced Leicester and Masham, giving it a beautifully soft, heathered appearance.
